New Work Alert: Jamila Woods
Back like I never left. The last few weeks have been STRESSFUL between a recent work retreat and personal work I haven't had time to breathe. It kills me when I don't have time to blog because at the end of the day I would much rather create content than spend my days making other peoples dreams come true, but don't even get me started on that because thats a WHOLE separate blog post. (steps off soapbox)*
One of my favorite recent projects is a website I just wrapped up for vocalist and poet Jamila Woods. You may remember this moodboard, where I discussed her style and the idea to base it around vintage JET Magazines. The project is done and I'm ecstatic to show the results. As apart of my client questionnaire I asked Jamila to describe herself in two words her response was "blk girl" and at that moment I knew one thing and one thing only. "Say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud lol!" I knew that the website should be bold with big images that show personality. After looking at her moodboard and the JET images it was easy to figure out how to combine the two.
When I asked Jamila how she wanted to be perceived by her audience she replied "powerful, warm, magical, genuine, approachable; I want to be a role model young people of color, especially black girls." this answer reminded me to design something approachable that could have a reach across different platform. aka something that kids and adults could love without looking too PG or Rated R. Feel free to check out the site, Jamila's new single Blk Girl Soldier, and her feature on Macklemore's White Privilege II.
